Description

The barn attached to Forest Farmhouse dates from the 17th and 18th centuries and has undergone alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. It features a 17th-century timber frame and 18th-century walls made of red brick, incorporating some glazed headers in English, Flemish, and Flemish garden wall bond (3:1). The roof, originally hipped at both ends, is now only hipped at the north end and is covered with plain tiles. The barn consists of five bays, with the outer bays being half-width and located under the hips. It has a double-aisled design with opposed central cart entries.

On the west elevation, there is a tall cart entry with strap-hinged board doors beneath a vertically-boarded gable that includes a 2-light, 4-pane window. The east elevation features three 20th-century raking buttresses to the left of the board cart-entry doors. Inside, the barn showcases a high-quality timber frame made of large scantling timbers, with jowelled posts now resting on brick plinths. The posts flanking the rear cart-entry have gun-stock jowels, all supported by braces to the arcade plates and tie-beams, with some braces being curved. The interior also includes raking queen posts, some of which are curved, clasped purlins, coupled rafters, and arched wind braces in the central bay. At the south end, there is a door leading into Forest Farmhouse, indicating that the barn was originally free-standing.
