Description

The Royal Hotel, located on St Peter Street, is largely a reconstruction of an earlier building dating from 1833, with its front elevation representing the early 19th century. It is three storeys high and built of stucco with rusticated quoins, exhibiting some Italianate detailing. It features a narrow, recessed centre and an old tile roof. The windows are irregular and comprise sash windows with glazing bars. A painted brick band separates the floors. Inside, there is an early 18th-century staircase. The rear of the building contains early 16th-century brick chimney stacks and evidence of an earlier building.

Adjoining the main hotel is the Royal Hotel Annexe, built in the mid-19th century. This is a two-storey stucco building with a tile roof, a gable with wooden bargeboards, two sash windows, and a door. It connects the hotel with the building at number 23.

The Royal Hotel and its garden wall, along with numbers 2 to 9 (consecutive), 22, and 23, are considered to form a group of buildings.
