Description

This is a 17th-century house, altered in the mid-19th century. It is attributed to Sir Christopher Wren. The building is two storeys high with a basement and attic, and is located on St Peter Street. The front elevation has brick walls covered with stucco, stone moulded strings, rusticated quoins, and a door surround. A very fine mullion eaves cornice is present. The stucco covering the front is flush with the quoins and obscures the original brickwork. The roof is hipped and slate-covered with one dormer window. There are three 19th-century sash windows on the front. The doorway is situated to the right of the ground floor window, and contains a panelled door with a moulded stone architrave and a flat moulded hood supported on carved consoles. The keystone of the arch is carved with a swag motif. On the side elevation, the brickwork is exposed with raised brick surrounds to the windows. A contemporary rainwater head bears the initials "F A". The house contains a contemporary staircase. The windows have been altered and subsequently repaired in their altered form. According to local tradition, the house was intended to be built by Charles II for Louise de Querrouaille, the Duchess of Portsmouth. The house forms a group with numbers 2 to 9 (inclusive), the Royal Hotel, a garden wall, and numbers 22 and 23.
