Description
Upper Silkstead Farmhouse is a farmhouse that has been converted into a row of cottages. Originally built in the 16th century, it was extended in the 18th century and altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. The structure features a timber frame with brick infill and additions, topped with an old plain tile roof. It is two storeys high and consists of four bays, with two additional bays added to the left end. Each of these two bays now forms a separate cottage. The building stands on a plinth made of flint and reused stone, which is particularly high on the right side.
The farmhouse has 20th-century doors with pent-roofed hoods. There are early 19th-century cast-iron casements with one, two, and three lights in all frame bays. The left bays feature a 20th-century outshot and a 17th-century studded door on one side, complete with strap hinges, and a gable on the left bay. The roof is half-hipped, and there are stacks located between the right bays of the frame, with one in each of the left bays and on the left hip.
