Description

Lower Silkstead Farmhouse and the adjoining barn have been converted into one residence. The building dates from the 15th and 16th centuries, with alterations made in the 19th century and restoration completed in 1983. It features a timber-frame structure with brick infill and an old plain tile roof. The barn is weatherboarded and partly rebuilt in brick with additional brick elements.

The barn, which has three bays and is one and a half stories tall, is located along the road, while a two-bay, two-story cross-wing is at the left end. The original house was likely a three-bay structure from the 15th century, with the 16th-century cross-wing added later. The road elevation includes a 20th-century brick plinth wall for the main barn section, which is weatherboarded and has a small 20th-century one and two-light casement window, along with three Velux windows in the hipped roof.

The cross-wing displays exposed timber-frame with brick infill and features a jettied first floor. On the ground floor, there is an early 19th-century two-light cast-iron lozenge pane casement window, accompanied by a Victorian letterbox set into a brick pier. The first floor has a 19th-century oriel window with carved finials on the brackets, a hipped roof, and three similar cast-iron casements. The gable is tile-hung and includes a small casement and carved bargeboards. The left side of the cross-wing mirrors this style, featuring a 19th-century full-height projecting porch with ornate bargeboards and a tile-hung first floor. A large central stack with a cruciform section is present on the cross-wing.
