Description

The Church of St Nicholas is a parish church that dates from the 12th century, with 13th-century elements, a south transept added in 1803, and a near-total rebuilding in 1862 by the architects F & H Francis. The church is constructed of flint with Bath stone dressings, featuring stepped buttresses, lancet windows, and cusped two and three-light windows, along with Decorated tracery on the gables of the chancel and transepts. The south transept has brick walls, and the roof is tiled.

In an Early English style, the church has an aisleless nave and chancel, north and south transepts, a south chapel, and a west tower that serves as the entrance. The tower is notable for its diagonal buttresses, a timber-framed bell stage topped with a shingled broach spire, and a Norman west door that has been re-set from an earlier structure.

Inside, the church features a Victorian interior with several wall monuments from the 18th and 19th centuries. The chancel contains remnants of a 15th-century table tomb with cusped panels, while the south chapel boasts a fine wall monument from 1569 dedicated to William Uvedale, adorned with strap work. The south transept houses a significant alabaster tomb from 1615 for Sir William Uvedale, featuring classical details, an arched canopy, male and female effigies, and kneelers. Additional features include a west gallery and a canopied font.
