Description
The Old Thatch is a house dating to the 17th century, situated on the west side of Broughton High Street. It is primarily timber-frame, with most of the frame now concealed behind colour-washed brickwork, and topped with a thatched roof. The house is 1½ storeys and originally comprised three bays, with a low wing added to the rear on the right, initially serving as a service building, and another to the rear on the left. The front of the house has a plinth, and a central 19th-century pent-roofed bay window, with the roof extended to the right to form a hood over a four-panel door, which is accessed by two brick steps. The bay window has a six-light Gothic casement. To the left of the bay window is a blocked door opening, and near each end of the front are 20th-century three-light casements. There are 18th-century three-light casements set within eyebrow dormers over the left and centre bays. The roof is half-hipped to the left and features a large ridge stack to the left of the centre. A single-storey, four-bay service wing extends from the rear on the right. One bay of the service wing abuts the main house and contains a three-light casement, while the next bay has exposed timber framing and a two-light casement.
