Description
Chestnut Cottage is a small house located on the east side of Broughton High Street. It dates from the mid-18th century and has been extended in the 20th century, with a possibly earlier core. The building is constructed of colourwashed brick and features an old plain tile roof.
The house is two storeys tall with four bays, while the far end is one and a half storeys due to the 20th-century extension. The front façade includes a six-panel door in a solid frame, situated in the second bay from the road, and is sheltered by an open porch with a flat head supported by hexagonal posts and trellised sides. There is a 12-pane sash window in the road bay and 16-pane sashes in the far bays, all of which are topped with rubbed brick heads. A string course runs along the first floor. The central bays on the first floor feature 9-pane sashes, while the end bays have 2-light casements. The road end of the house has a tripartite sash window with a segmental head, a 9-pane casement under a rubbed brick head, and a 2-light leaded casement in the gable. The roof is half-hipped and includes a stack positioned behind the ridge above the door.
