Description
Nos. 5 and 6 Chant Close are now two houses but were originally the railway station, consisting of the stationmaster's house (number 6) and the attached station building (number 5). Built in 1884, the buildings feature brick walls and a hipped tile roof. The L-shaped house is two storeys high with one window on the front. Architectural details include stepped brick eaves, cambered rubbed arches, a moulded band at the first floor, and decorative aprons beneath the moulded stone cills. The windows are coupled sashes with unusual glazing bars, and there is one rectangular bay with a tiled roof. The doorway, located beneath a relieving arch, has a hood supported by brackets and a half-glazed door. The single-storey station block is symmetrical with four windows and a set-back unit of one window at the east end. It features deep stepped brick eaves, cambered rubbed arches, and a decorative apron on a panel beneath the moulded stone cills. The outer openings have coupled sashes, while the inner windows are sheltered by a wide canopy supported by four brackets, which covers the central entrance. The structure remains virtually unaltered.
