Description

Houghton Mill is a mid-18th century brick mill, originally colourwashed, with a slate roof. It is a three-story, seven-bay by three-bay structure. The front elevation features a wide six-panel door with lights on either side, centrally located on the left-hand side. Above this door is a balcony supported by two cast iron columns with a wrought iron balcony, approached by French windows. A planked door is positioned to the right of centre, with a blank space above it. On the ground and first floors, each bay has a pair of two-light cast iron Gothic casements. The second floor features similar casements, except for a blank bay to the right of centre. The roof is hipped, with a stack positioned on the front face near the right end. A mill wheel was originally located at the left end. The right end of the mill has a flush-panel door with a fanlight, along with matching windows. The other front of the mill has slightly projecting centre bays topped with a pediment.
