Description

The Grange is a late 18th-century house, extended in the late 19th century, originally of an L-shape with three-bay wings. The building is constructed of brick, formerly colourwashed, and has a plain tile roof. The original house comprised a two-storey, three-bay section facing the road, with another wing behind to the left. This is now linked to a two-storey, two-bay cottage, which is set back and forward of the main body, with a single-storey bay added to its left, and a 19th-century cross-wing added to the right end of the front.

The road elevation shows the original three-bay section with the single-storey bay to the left and a half-bay with a projecting cross-wing to the right. In the centre of the original part, a four-panel door is accompanied by a semicircular fanlight, both contained within a wide, gabled brick porch with moulded bargeboards. Above the door, there are two-light casements on each floor, with Gothic-style three-light casements also on both floors. A similar two-light casement is in the left addition, which features a pier at its end and a low parapet. To the right are small sash windows in the half-bay and a three-light casement on the first floor of the wing. The roof is hipped to the left and features a stack at the right end of the original building. The building was historically the centre of the Longstock Fishing Club around 1800, believed to be the earliest club on the Test.
