Description
This is a war memorial built in 1919, designed by the architect Thomas D Atkinson of Cambridge and Winchester. It commemorates those who served and fell in both World Wars.
The memorial is constructed of ashlar stone blocks and consists of a two-step square base, a square socket stone, and a four-sided tapered column topped with a Patee cross encircled by a wreath of leaves and flowers. A dedication to the men of the parish who served and fell in the Great War is inscribed on the front, eastern side of the socket stone in serif capitals, reading: 'IN REMEMBRANCE / OF THE MEN OF / LONGSTOCK / WHO SERVED THEIR / COUNTRY AS SAILORS / & SOLDIERS IN THE / WAR OF 1914-1919'. The dedication 'NOBLY THEY DID THEIR DUTY' is on the top step of the base, and the names of those who fell in the 1939-1945 war are on the bottom step. A dedication reading 'THESE REST IN / PEACE' appears on the rear of the socket stone, while the names of the men who fell in the First World War are inscribed on the remaining two sides of the socket stone.
The memorial was built in 1919 by Blackwell's, and the firm of Blackwell and Moody cleaned and re-cut the names in 2008. It is considered to be of good quality craftmanship and design, reflecting a simple yet elegant architect-designed memorial. The memorial’s visual prominence within the village, situated within the conservation area and close to other listed buildings, contributes to its significance.
