Description

The Square and Yew House are a pair of semi-detached houses, with an earlier core dated to the late 18th century, although No.4 has undergone significant alterations in the 20th century. The houses are constructed of brick in a header bond, with some blue bricks, and have an old plain tile roof. No.4 is colourwashed.

The house to the right (Yew) is a two-storey, five-bay block with a hipped lean-to on the right end and an older wing to the rear. To the left is a taller, two-storey, three-bay range, with a parallel range to the rear of the left two bays; the right bays belong to Yew, and the rear range extends from the centre bay.

The ground floor of the right-hand section contains a six-panel door under a flat hood and a small 16-pane sash window. A 20-pane sash window is found in each bay, set in rubbed brick arches. A C20 top-glazed door has been inserted on the right-hand end. An 18th-century six-panel double door with bullseye lights in the top panels and reeded borders to the bottom ones is located at the right end of the taller part, sheltered by an open timber porch with a tented lead roof. The bays to the left have been rebuilt and colourwashed. The ground floor in the centre slightly projects, featuring two 20th-century three-light windows, with one window above and one at the left end above a 20th-century door. Toothed eaves and a half-hipped roof to the left are present, along with a stack at each end of the right part. No.4 is listed for group value.
