Description

The Church of St Mary is a parish church with Norman origins that was rebuilt in 1854 by architect Woodyer. It is constructed of flint and tile and features an aisleless nave and chancel, along with a vestry located to the north of the chancel and a south porch. The church has a plain roof and cast-iron rainwater leads that are dated 1852. At the west end, there is a belfry topped with a small broach spire and a bell-stage clad in shingles, supported by the west wall and two massive stepped buttresses. The flint walls are accented with stone dressings, including buttresses at the east end of the nave and a cill band around the chancel. The windows consist of coupled lights with plate tracery, some cusped lancets, and a traceried three-light window at the east. The porch is timber-framed on a low base wall, featuring cusped openings above panels and ornamental gabled framework. The interior is predominantly Victorian, except for the responds from around 1200 that support the chancel arch. On the north side of the nave, at the east end, there are two small wall-brasses dated 1599 and 1662.
