Description
Hope Cottage and Shop is a house and shop that dates from the 17th century, with later additions from the late 18th century and late 19th century. The building features a combination of flint and brick construction, with thatch and slate roofing. The original part of the structure is a timber-framed building that was re-clad in the late 18th century. It has one storey and an attic, with two windows above three. The roof is hipped at the east end, with eaves raised above the upper windows and a catslide roof at the rear. The flint walls are accented with brick quoins, bands, cambered arches, a plinth, and signs of previous alterations. The windows are casements, and there is a boarded door set within an architrave.
Attached at the west end, at a slight angle, is a late 19th-century two-storey house with one window, featuring a slate roof and painted brick walls, while the ground floor has a shop front. Inside the older section, the rear wall of the original timber frame is exposed. Additionally, there is a small 20th-century extension set back on the east side, which has a slate roof and painted brick walls.
