Description

Grateley House is a large house with extensive service blocks that adjoin the roadway, built around 1840 and later in the 19th century. It is constructed of brick and slate. The symmetrical front, facing south, features two storeys and three windows, topped by a low-pitched hipped roof. The red brick walls are laid in Flemish bond, with rubbed flat arches and a stone band at the first floor, which is now interrupted by lowered cills. The ground floor has sashes set in reveals, with splayed brick bays, each containing three sash windows. A plain arched doorway includes a fanlight and a half-glazed door.

A notable feature of the elevation is a stone-flagged verandah supported by thin cast-iron columns, which have oval arches to accommodate the varying spans as the eaves extend across the front, around the bays, and along the west side of the building. The verandah also has trellis spandrels and side panels, along with a concave leaded roof. The east elevation mirrors this style, being symmetrical with two storeys and three windows, although the south side is blank. The ground floor has recessed openings, while the north side has been replaced with a shallow brick three-light rectangular bay. An Ionic porch features two plain columns and two pilasters, a fanlight, and a late 19th-century door with two vertical panels.

To the north of the east elevation is the east end of the north service block, which has flint and brick walls. The roadside elevation to the north is primarily from the late 19th century, constructed of mixed materials including flint and brick, with some sections featuring brick diaper patterns. This elevation consists of two storeys, one storey, and an attic, with a carriage arch that has been filled in.
