Description
The Lodge to Clatford Lodge, built in 1836, is a structure made of stucco and slate. It features an archway that leads into a passage beneath an upper room, flanked by single-storey wings. Originally, the building was constructed by the owner of the nearby Waterloo Ironworks (Taskers) to serve as a school and chapel in the east wing, and a schoolmaster's house in the west wing. Later, rear extensions were added, and it became a residential lodge. The symmetrical front (south) has two windows in each wing, and each unit has a hipped roof. The segmental arch rests against plain pilasters at the front, while the wing walls have wide chamfers at each corner and exaggerated coving at the eaves. Each window features an arched opening framed in rusticated flint quoins, with casement windows that have cast-iron small frames topped with Gothic heads. Inside the arched passageway, there is a Gothic doorway on the west side and a similar window, which was formerly a doorway, on the opposite side.
