Description
North Houghton is a house dating from the early 18th century, with alterations made in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of brick and has a slate roof. The building is three stories high, with the second floor added in the late 18th century. It features a three-bay by two-bay layout, and to the left, there is a slightly set-back two-story addition from the 19th century, which includes stables behind it.
The front of the house has a plinth and a central flat-roofed brick porch from the 19th century, which has a top-lit door and a fanlight. Above the porch, there is a 12-pane sash window, and on either side of it, there are large 16-pane sash windows on both floors. The second floor has a wide 6-pane sash window in the center, with wide 8-pane sash windows on either side. All the sash windows feature rubbed brick arches and blind boxes.
The roof is low-pitched with wide eaves and stacks located at the tops of the hips. The left addition has 12-pane sash windows and a hipped roof with a stack on the left wall of the main part of the house. Inside, behind the porch, there is a panelled reveal, a fanlight, and pilasters from the original doorway. The hall features an early 18th-century dogleg staircase on the left, which has turned balusters and a moulded handrail, and on the right, there is a moulded timber archway under the return stairs. Many 18th-century doors and other features are still present. The cellar is made of narrow Tudor bricks.
