Description
Embley Lodge North is a lodge that serves as the northern part of a pair linked by a gateway, located at the entrance to Embley Park. It was built around 1840, with extensions added in the mid-19th century and 20th century. The lodge features stucco walls with moulded copings, caps, impost bands, and panels, along with a plain plinth and bold keys above the arched openings. The doorway, which is now filled, has an eaved architrave, and the roof is hipped and covered with slate.
The oldest section of the lodge is a tall, single-storey pavilion designed in a classical style with a symmetrical form. This rectangular block has broad rusticated pilasters at each corner, and arches with triple keys above the window openings at the front and rear. The wider part facing the driveway originally contained the entrance, and the upper section features a plain parapet with central panels, topped at both the front and rear by concave pedestals that lack a top ornament.
At the front southeast side, a wall extends on each side, curving down to a gate pier on the south side and to a second pier on the north side, which is attached to the curved end of the wall and features a 19th-century window. The arched windows are sash windows. A larger, two-storey wing from the mid-19th century has been added to the original structure; this wing is a plain rectangular block with stuccoed walls, small casements, and a slate roof. The building continues with a 20th-century extension that extends northward from the north end.
