Description
The Sawmill north of Paulton House is a mid-19th century water-powered mill situated beside the Cadnam River, below a U-shaped lake that provides hydraulic power. It is a plain rectangular building with brick walls on three sides and features a slate roof. The mill is associated with a deep brick-lined channel that houses the water wheel, which has a cast-iron frame and iron scoops, with the axle extending into the building to support the eaves. Inside, there is a series of wood-working machines powered by the water wheel through a set of shafts. The mill is operational and also serves as an exhibition space within a country park.
