Description
No 8 and 8A on Newbury Street is a former vicarage dating from the early 18th century. The building features a symmetrical facade on the north side, which has two storeys and an attic, with two-storey wings on either side. The facade has a steep slate roof with a modillion cornice that forms a pediment above the three central windows, and there is a small arched window in the tympanum. Massive stepped chimney stacks are located at each end of the taller central section. The lower roofs of the wings are concealed by the front wall, which has a stone coping that curves up to the center block. The walls are finished in stucco with cambered openings, and there is a plain band at the second floor level of the wings, along with a plinth. The windows are sashes set in exposed frames. An Ionic porch with two columns and two pilasters stands on stone steps, featuring a fanlight above a six-panelled door, with a secondary door at the far west side. A portion of a forecourt wall remains, constructed of yellow brick with simple piers, although the original railings are no longer present.
