Description
The Iron Pear Tree Cottages, now two dwellings, began as a public house dating back to the 17th century, with substantial alterations in the late 18th century and early 19th century. The building is constructed of brick, flint, and render, with thatched and slate roofing. It has a complex form resulting from alterations and additions, originally being timber-framed with projecting wings at each end, a rear infill wing, and a forward projection added in the early 19th century. The cottages are two storeys high with irregular window placement. The ½-hipped thatched roof is on the south side, while the north wing is lower with a hipped slate roof. The front wall is rendered with a plinth. Windows include casements and sash windows set within reveals on the north wing. A ½-glazed porch with a slate roof is attached to No. 1 (south side), while No. 2 has an entrance on the north elevation, sheltered by a 20th-century canopy supported by brackets. The rear elevation features three gables and flint panels set in brickwork—English bond at the lower portion and header bond above—all currently painted. Exposed timber framing can be seen in two of the gables, with casement windows.
