Description
A group of three buildings, numbered 18, 20 and 20A, forming The Hundred, dated to the early to mid-19th century. They share a single roof span and have a hipped slate roof with overhanging eaves supported by flat brackets.
Number 18 is a three-storey building constructed of colourwashed brick, with three windows. It features three tall sash windows with three panes per sash, set within painted brick reveals. A modern plate-glass shop front occupies the ground floor, with a more recent fascia superimposed on the original, which is still visible at the east end above the original house door. The original door has six moulded and fielded panels within panelled reveals, topped by a rectangular fanlight with rectangular tracery. The doorway is flanked by pilasters, and retains its original cornice and fascia, which extends over the shop front.
Number 20A consists of a shop on the ground floor to the east of Number 18, with the upper floors of Number 20 situated to the east again, incorporating a shop and upper floors. The upper floors are faced with colourwashed stucco. Number 20A and the upper floors of Number 20 each have a single window bay on the upper floors, flanked by grooved and moulded pilasters with horizontal fluted bands. Narrow bays are found to the east, terminating in a similar pilaster. The windows are sash windows and lack glazing bars. The westernmost window on the first floor has a fluted architrave frame with paterae in the corners and a moulded cornice above, featuring a fluted band extending across the bay and connecting with the horizontal bands in the pilasters. Number 20A has a plate-glass shop front from the early 20th century on the ground floor. Number 20 has a more recent 20th-century plate-glass shop front extending across the entire front of the building.
Group Value: The buildings contribute to the group value of this range of commercial premises.
