Description
The remains of the old church, dating from around 1300, are located in Stockbridge. The chancel is constructed of rubble flint, mostly rendered, with stone dressings and brick repairs. It features a 14th-century, two-light trefoiled east window. On the north side, there is a small northeast buttress and a taller northwest buttress, along with several memorials on the wall. These include a 17th-century memorial to Jones Cesom, a 1737 memorial to Anne Gauntlet, a 1764 memorial to Thomas Gauntlet, a 1729 memorial to Edward Avenvile, and a 1774 memorial to John Attwood.
The south wall has a low square opening with a timber lintel at the east, flanked by reset corbel blocks. To the west, there is a late 13th-century pointed arch with two chamfered orders, originally leading to a south chapel, which is now blocked. Also to the west is a late 13th-century pointed chancel arch with two orders, featuring simply mounded capitals and carved breasts as stops on the returns, along with shafts that have moulded bases. This arch is also blocked, but in the center is a reset 15th-century door with two moulded orders and a 19th-century plank door with studs and straps, accompanied by a short buttress.
Inside, there is a large pointed rear arch leading to the east window. On the walls, painted achievements of royal arms are displayed, with 'ER 1588' on the south side and 'GR 1726' on the north side. The north wall contains two blocked painted windows and a memorial from 1683 to Mary Gibes. In the southeast corner, there is a pointed niche with a damaged piscina below it. To the west, there is a round arch with a slight chamfer, possibly a sedilion. Inside, a square low window can be found, along with a 17th-century altar table. The roof features a ceiling above a cambered tie.
