Description

247-259 Weybourne Road is a row of former cottages and a former public house, with origins dating back to the 17th century, along with alterations from the 18th and 20th centuries. The building features a mix of brick and some timber framing, topped with tile roofing.

The structure is an irregular terrace of two-storey cottages. Number 247, known as Gate End, projects forward and has a lesser gable dating from around 1900. Numbers 249-255 form a taller block with a mansard roof, while numbers 257 and 259 are wider, lower units that end in a rustic or picturesque feature from around 1900. The roofing is primarily tile, mostly half-hipped, with brick dentil eaves. Numbers 257 and 259 showcase patterned tile-hanging on the first floor. The walls are mainly red brick, with several blue headers, constructed in mainly English bond but with some Monk bond. The openings feature cambered arches, casement windows with square leaded lights, and simple doors. The ground floor of number 257 is partly wood-framed and brick-nogged, and it includes a large open porch with a gabled tile roof supported by an open wooden frame on a brick walled base.

Part of this group was the original Fox and Hounds Inn, also known as 'The Dog Kennels', which is reflected in the nearby Dog Kennel Bridge.

The buildings are designated for their attractive vernacular detailing and their historical significance as cottages of early origin with later modifications that enhance their architectural composition.
