Description

Great Testwood Lodge is a gateway lodge to a country house, built in the mid to late 18th century, possibly by Capability Brown, and extended in the 20th century. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with flint dressings and features a pyramidal roof that has been re-clad in concrete tiles, along with a moulded brick eaves cornice. There is a brick lateral stack on the north side.

The lodge has a square-on-plan Palladian design with one room on the ground floor. The entrance is on the east side, facing the drive, and there is a 20th-century outshut on the north side and a small 20th-century addition at the rear. The building is two storeys tall with a cellar. The ground floor displays brick and flint rustication with a brick band above. Each side has one bay with a large recessed round arch, and the first floor features a 3-light Diocletian-like window. The south side's window has been converted to a single-light sash, while the north side's window is blind.

The doorway on the east side has a flush-panel door and a late 19th-century tiled canopy supported by wooden braces. The south side has 19th-century four-pane sashes, and there is a small 20th-century glazed addition on the west side, along with the aforementioned outshut on the north side. The interior has not been inspected.

The lodge is attributed to Capability Brown, who remodelled the grounds at Great Testwood around 1765. The main house, Great Testwood Park, was demolished in the 1930s.
