Description

The Church of St Winfrid is a parish church built in 1937 by N Cachemaille-Day. It features brick walls in English bond, arched openings, and parapets, topped with a pantile roof. The design resembles an early Italian basilica, characterized by its exaggerated horizontal dimensions. The church has a nave with aisles and a tower at one corner, which is surrounded at its base by flat-roofed vestries and a large porch that includes three arched openings. The long face of the tower displays patterned brickwork in the shape of a cross. There are three windows in the aisle, a recessed doorway, smaller clerestory windows, and rows of small lights below the parapets of the vestry block. The gable ends feature three middle windows on two levels, broad pilasters, and single aisle windows.

Inside, the impression of length is altered; the nave is square and oriented across the aisles, which are separated by single arches that rise in curves from the floor. The aisles have half-barrel vaults made of plaster. At right angles beneath the gables, there are upper galleries fronted by two large arches that separate the church from a corridor and baptistry on each side. A flat panelled ceiling extends across the nave and galleries, while the interior is simply plastered with plain furnishings.
