Description
The Fishing Cottage is a house dating from the early to mid-19th century. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond at the front and has a clay plain tile roof with gabled and hipped ends. The building features brick gable-end and axial stacks. The layout consists of a front range with two rooms and a central entrance, along with a parallel range at the rear. The front range appears to have two phases of construction; the left side is an early to mid-19th century addition, while the right side is part of the original early 19th-century build, which connects with the right-hand return elevation and the rear range.
The exterior is two storeys high and has an almost symmetrical three-bay east front. It features 16-pane sash windows in flush cases, with the larger sash on the left. The central doorway has a moulded doorcase with panelled reveals, a flush-panel door, and a later open wooden porch. Above the door, there is an oval stair window with radiating glazing bars. The rear range is set back on the left and includes a 16-pane sash window. Similar sashes and casements are found on the other elevations, and there is a canted bay window at the rear. The cottage is situated on the banks of the River Test.
