Description

The Station Hotel is a public house built in the Art Nouveau style around 1900. It features brick walls in Flemish bond with some thin moulded dressings, and part of the upper walls are slate-hung. The roof is tiled. The building presents a complex asymmetrical design, with a wide central block that has two storeys and an attic. To the right, there is a gable facing the roadway, topped with a half-timbered triangle and a small triple casement window. The long slope on the right side is balanced by a rounded first-floor window, which has mullioned and transomed lights, and is surrounded by a wide curved eaves beneath a tall concave leaded roof, finished with a wrought-iron fleche.

On one side, there is a plain two-storey bay next to a recessed arched entrance, while the centre of the gable features a ground-floor bay with a semi-circular centerpiece. The south wing has a faceted elevation that continues with slate hanging above a group of windows and a doorway, all enclosed in columns between the tilted slating and moulded cills. This angular feature wraps around the wing, which has four hips and a projecting brick stack that breaks up the fenestration.

Behind the ornate facade facing Station Road, the structure transitions into simpler units, each with its own roof form and varying heights, providing service and former stable accommodation. This multi-formed exterior is visible at the corner with High Street, enclosed by a low brick wall with two gateways, each flanked by gate piers topped with ball finials above wide stone cornices. The windows consist of square leaded lights with unit panes, and one upper group features a central panel displaying the hotel’s name in exaggerated tall lettering.
