Description
Town Mill is a mill that dates from the 18th century and was altered and extended in the 19th century. It is constructed of brick in Flemish bond and features an old plain tile and slate roof. The building is two storeys high with two bays, and it has a 2½ storey wide bay addition from the 19th century at one end, along with a 19th-century house at the other end, which is not included in the listing.
The front of the mill has a 19th-century bay on the right-hand side that houses an external Armfield of Ringwood cast-iron undershot wheel. At the left-hand end of the older section, there is a 19th-century plank door set in a solid frame, with a two-light casement window beside it and two additional casements in the other bay. On the first floor, there are large and small two-light casements in each bay, several S-shape tie plates, and a long iron plate above the centre bay windows. The right-hand bay features a nine-pane casement and has higher eaves.
Inside the mill, much of the machinery remains, and part of it is currently being restored. The mill race runs towards the older part of the building before turning at a right angle in front of the centre bay and the undershot wheel.
