Description

The Church of St Michael and All Angels is a parish church located in Bransgore, with a tower dating from the 18th century and the remainder of the building rebuilt between 1875 and 1883 by the architect G.E. Street. The church is constructed of brick with Portland and Bath stone dressings and features a plain tile roof. Its layout includes a chancel with a north lean-to vestry and a gabled organ chamber, alongside a three-bay nave that has a south porch and an 18th-century west tower.

The east end is adorned with a Decorated three-light window, with a string course below it. The north side features a gabled organ chamber at the center, flanked by lean-tos with trefoiled lancets. The south side has a string course that steps down in the center, with a similar Decorated window to the west and a trefoiled lancet to the east. The nave is supported by stepped buttresses between the bays and at the corners, with kneelered gable walls. Most windows are two-light trefoiled designs, except for the south porch, which is located in the center bay. The gabled porch has a gable wall and corner buttresses, along with a three-order doorway. To the west of the tower, there are trefoiled lancet windows on either side. The 18th-century tower features 19th-century stepped buttresses at the top of its second stage. The west entrance has a pointed door dated 1882, above which are two 18th-century rubbed brick round-headed windows with stone keys; the first window contains a 19th-century two-light trefoiled insertion, while the upper window has louvres. The tower is topped with a modillioned cornice and a parapet with stone corner finials.

Inside, the church contains stained glass, likely created by Street. The east end features a stone reredos depicting Christ and the Gospel writers under canopies, along with a south-east piscina and sedilia. The north-west corner houses the organ. The interior also showcases decorative tilework and a barrel-vaulted roof, with a chamfered chancel arch supported by corbels. The nave has a half-octagonal-vaulted roof and a raised west pew with panelling. Next to the south door, there is an octagonal font.
