Description
The Ringwood War Memorial is a Cross of Sacrifice war memorial that was unveiled in 1921. It is a replica of Sir Reginald Blomfield’s 1918 design for the Imperial War Graves Commission.
The memorial is made of Portland stone and features a bronze sword mounted on an octagonal shaft and crossarm. It stands on a stepped octagonal plinth, which has a Nabresina limestone tablet. The plinth has panels on each side; the front panel is inscribed with painted lettering that reads, ‘IN / GRATEFUL MEMORY / OF THE MEN / OF RINGWOOD / WHO LOST / THEIR LIVES / FOR THEIR / KING AND COUNTRY / IN THE / GREAT WAR / 1914-1918’. The names of 111 fallen soldiers are listed alphabetically on the other seven plaques.
After the Second World War, a sloped tablet was added to the base, inscribed with ‘ROLL OF HONOUR 1939-1945’, followed by the names of 53 fallen soldiers, and the phrase ‘LET US REMEMBER THOSE WHO WILL NOT RETURN’. The cross is surrounded by chains that are linked to short octagonal piers.
