Description
The Rockbourne War Memorial is located prominently on the main village street in Rockbourne, within a small three-sided hedged enclosure that is accessed by eight stone steps. The memorial features a sandstone cross atop a tapered column, which is set on a two-step square plinth resting on a square stone base.
Inscriptions and names are carved on the east faces of the plinths. The uppermost inscription reads: "TO THE HONOURED MEMORY OF OUR MEN WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES 1914-1918." The lower face lists ten names of those who lost their lives in the First World War. The south face of the upper plinth is inscribed with "1939-1945," beneath which are four names of those who lost their lives in the Second World War. On the west face, the upper plinth bears the inscription: "THE FITTEST PLACE WHERE MAN CAN DIE IS WHERE HE DIES FOR MAN."
Additionally, a metal plaque was later added to the north face of the plinth, which repeats the names inscribed on the east face.
