Description

The Church of St. James is a parish church built between 1839 and 1840 by John Elliott, with a south aisle added in 1857 by Colson and a north aisle completed in 1892 by Blomfield. It features flint walling with stone and cement dressings, plain arched openings, flat buttresses, and eaves with brackets, all topped by a slate roof. Designed in a Norman style, the church has a nave with three bays, a west-end gallery, and wide north and south aisles leading to the chancel. A prominent feature of the church is its tall west gable, which includes a gabled bell turret and corner turrets with octagonal spires above open framework. The church also has an open narthex with stairs on each side that lead to external gallery doors, as well as a plain arched entrance. The interior is characterized by simple round arches.
