Description
The Monument (London) Lodges are early 19th-century buildings located at the entrance to Stratfield Saye Park, which was given as a national gift to the Duke of Wellington in 1817. These two small, two-storey lodges are symmetrical and positioned on either side of the entrance gate. They feature low-pitched hipped slate roofs with a moulded cornice adorned with small modillions that runs continuously around the buildings, including above and below the pediment. Each lodge has a small central chimney and is constructed of stucco.
The front of each lodge has a pediment above a slightly projecting section that contains a blind arch flanked by wide pilasters. There is an impost band, which serves as a first-floor band around each block, and a central window opening above a plinth. The inner sides of the lodges each have two windows on both floors, with the upper windows being two-light casements and the ground-floor windows being sashes set in reveals, one of which is a plain door. The gateway between the lodges is marked by four posts topped with ball finials and features two pedestrian gates and a double carriageway gate, all with curved upper rails.
