Description
Martineau Cottages, built in 1889, is a two-storey building with a Tudor/romantic style. The symmetrical front faces east and features a slightly projecting center and ends, with a total of five ground floor windows arranged in a 1:1:2:1:1 pattern. The red tile roof has five gables at the front, each adorned with ornamented barge-boards, while the central gable projects forward above an open timber framed porch. The prominent chimney stacks have rectangular bases and support groups of two or three octagonal flues. The upper walls are made of exposed timber frames with rendered infill, while the lower walls are constructed of red brickwork in Flemish bond, featuring a high plinth. The windows are wooden casements, and the first-floor bays in the wings have cyma-curved plaster soffits protected by jettied gables. There is a central wide porch and smaller side porches at the angles, which have open timber frames on brick walls.
