Description
Kingsley Cottages, comprising Nos 1, 2, 3, and 4, also known as Martineau Cottages, were built in 1896. The cottages exhibit a symmetrical facade with a 1:2:1 window arrangement. They have red tile roofs with full gables at each end, with a jettied first floor and smaller gables above the central windows. Prominent brick chimney stacks feature rectangular bases and upper sections with plaster strips and ornamental tops. The upper walls are half-timbered, with brick infilling utilizing a herringbone pattern in the center and a fretted design under the gables. The ground floor is constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond, featuring rubbed flat arches, tile sills, and a plinth. Wooden casement windows are present throughout. A central plain door is sheltered by a tiled canopy; other entrances are positioned to the sides, each framed by a gabled timber-framed porch built on brick walls. Separate utility blocks are located at the rear. A commemorative stone wall tablet, displaying a bust of Charles Kingsley, is situated at the east end.
