Description

This is a pair of villas built around 1833 on Bury Road. They are stucco-faced and sit on the north side of the road. A flush stone panel in the eastern boundary wall, located within the former stable area, bears the initials “SL PW” above the date 1833.

The villas are two storeys high with a basement, each with a 1-2-1 window arrangement, originally featuring set-back side porches. The porch at number 30 is the original design. Number 28 has a two-storeyed Victorian bay window where a square bay previously stood. The roofs are low-pitched and slate-covered (though number 28 is now mostly pantile), with wide sloping eaves soffits and moulding at the top of the wall, with splayed window openings. The ground floor projection at number 28 has been replaced with a two-storeyed bay. The windows are sash windows set within reveals. The porches feature panels, mouldings, bands, and Greek-style ornamentation.

The rear garden front, particularly at number 28, is of special interest. It features a two-storeyed projection with rounded corners, numerous moulded bands and panels, small coupled windows, and a central arched opening. Marble steps lead up to an inner door. A brick party wall between the properties has a thickened panel containing a communicating door.
