Description

Flats and community hall, formerly an inn. The front block dates from the 18th century and was restored in the late 20th century. The rear wing is an 18th-century ballroom, also restored in the late 20th century. The front is rendered brickwork with applied ashlar lines, slate hung on the left side and brick on the right side and rear. The roof is hipped with plain tiles and stone chimney stacks. The rear wing is brown brick with red brick dressings and a tiled roof.

The front block is mainly of three storeys with five windows, but the right-hand section over a carriage entrance is of two storeys with two windows. Most windows are nine-pane sashes, except for the first floor of the principal part, which has twelve-pane sashes in moulded architraves. The parapet is ramped up in the centre with a moulded band between the first and second floors. The ground floor has a late 19th-century bow front decorated with two-colour green faience tiles with pilasters having Corinthian capitals. To the south is a semi-circular ended wing dating from the 18th century and in existence by 1750. This wing has two cambered eighteen-pane sashes to the end and four cambered eighteen-pane sashes to one side, with late 20th-century cambered arches below.

In the 18th century this building was known as the Red Lion Inn. It was greatly extended and renamed the Crown Hotel in 1910. The ballroom interior dating from circa 1910 was destroyed by fire in the mid 1980s.
