Description

This is a terrace of five cottages located on West Street, dating primarily from 1796, as indicated by a datestone on the first floor. Some earlier timber framing remains. Number 61 is slightly forward under a hipped gable. The cottages are built on a slope above the street, with a terraced brick walk in front of numbers 63 to 69. Number 61 is constructed of grey brick with red brick headers, number 63 is stuccoed with grooves to imitate stonework, and the remainder are red brick. The roof is tiled and hipped, and there is a large central chimney stack serving numbers 63 to 69. The cottages have two storeys and five windows in total, all with sash windows featuring glazing bars and boxed frames. All cottages except number 61 have plank doors with simple flat hoods above, which are likely modern replacements. Number 61 is accessed via a passageway under the façade of number 63; square panel timber framing is exposed in the west side wall of this passageway. The terrace forms a group with numbers 49 to 53 (odd), 57 to 73 (odd), and 36 to 44 (even), with numbers 42 and 44, 53, 57, and 73 being buildings of local interest.
