Description

Fort Fareham is a mid-19th century fort that was built as part of a series of fortifications to defend Portsmouth Harbour. It was likely constructed around 1860 during Lord Palmerston's second ministry, during a period of heightened tensions with France. The fort has an irregular shape and is surrounded by a bank made of red brick, which features tiers of arches on both the inside and outside. There is a moat surrounding the fort, which is now dry. The central area of Fort Fareham is currently used as an industrial estate, and some of the arches have been converted for industrial use. Fort Fareham and the Iron Bridge are considered to form a group.
