Description
West Lodge is a late 19th-century lodge, likely dating from circa 1885-90, probably designed by John Dando Sedding. It was built in a romantic picturesque Gothic style. The building is constructed of coursed stone rubble with a tiled roof; the northern slope retains original tiles laid in alternating courses of plain and curved tiles, while the southern slope has 20th-century plain tiles. A centrally placed stone chimneystack features three diagonally set stone stacks, one of which is missing.
The lodge is symmetrical, arranged as one storey and attic with two rooms facing the front and two rooms at the rear. The western, entrance front has a large gable with carved bargeboards, central and end carved pendants, and a central terracotta finial. A diamond-shaped opening leads to the attic, and there are two ground-floor windows with stone surrounds and relieving arches; these windows contain replaced mullioned and transomed casements. A doorcase has six chamfered panels to the door, and a gabled porch with a tiled roof, terracotta finial, identically carved bargeboards and pendants to the main gable, is supported on wooden supports with trelliswork and rustic branches. The side elevations feature small gables with carved bargeboards, terracotta finials, carved pendants and replaced mullioned and transomed casements.
West Lodge was built as a lodge to Netley Castle, which was remodelled between 1885 and 1890 in a similar romantic picturesque Gothic style by John Dando Sedding for the Hon. Col. Sir Henry Crichton.
