Description
The Old Church of St Bartholomew, formerly known as the Remains of the Church of All Saints, is a Grade II* listed building located on Botley Church Lane. This church dates back to the 13th century, with alterations made in the 16th century. The nave was removed in 1836, leaving a small rectangular chapel that is a single cell constructed of rubble, topped with a red tile roof and featuring a small bellcote at the west end. The chapel consists of three bays and includes lancet windows, as well as a central two-light trefoil-headed Perpendicular window that has been restored. The east window is a three-light foil-headed design with a label, accompanied by an oval 18th-century memorial to its left. The pointed west door incorporates reset Norman fragments, including nook shafts with scallop caps and a toothed-roll lobed window above. Inside, the chapel features exposed rafters of a waggon roof and plain panelled late Georgian pews arranged lengthwise, with some placed across at the west end. Although it is in an isolated setting, it remains an important historical survival.
