Description

Northbrook is a small mansion dating from the early 19th century, with alterations and extensions made in the mid-19th century. It is constructed of stucco with a slate roof. The building is close to a cube shape and displays classical architectural details. The south front is symmetrical, with three storeys and a pattern of 1-3-1 windows on the second floor. The ground floor features two-storeyed, widely splayed bays of three windows each on either side, with a single window at first-floor level, and a former entrance which is now filled in. A low-pitched hipped roof is topped by a shallow parapet. A thin cornice is raised above a central pediment, with shallow pilasters. Bands run at the first and second floor levels, and there is a plinth. The Victorian additions incorporate a parapet, cornice, bands, plinth, cambered heads, and thin architraves. Windows are sashes in reveals. The east elevation features four bays (original windows now plastered), with sashes in reveals. A porch, likely originating from the front elevation, is present in the third bay and is constructed in a full Doric order with two plain columns and pilasters. It has panelled reveals and a six-panelled door. The west elevation is plain, with a wide three-storeyed bay at the north side, containing one window (French doors at ground floor). A further French window is also present. At the rear are mid-19th century service blocks, showing two gables, one of two storeys and attic and the other of two storeys. Inside, features reflect a late Regency and early Victorian style, alongside evidence of substantial alterations to the interior layout.
