Description

Ganwells is a house with earlier origins, primarily dating from the late 18th century, featuring Regency details and a mid-19th century exterior. The building has roughcast walls on two sides, while the others are constructed of brickwork with some tile-hung upper walls, topped with a tiled roof. The front elevation faces south and is two storeys high with four windows. The roof is half-hipped at the west end and hipped at the east end. The plain walls are complemented by a high parapet with thick coping and a plinth. The first floor has sashes in exposed frames, while the ground floor features coupled French windows with narrow side panes; the east bay includes a sash window in reveals above a rectangular bay with a hipped tile roof. The doorway, dating from the early 19th century, is adorned with a cornice that has modillions and dentils, supported by deep pilasters that are panelled with diagonal patterns on each face, and features a half-glazed door. The east elevation, from the mid-19th century, continues this style with four windows. At the rear, there are four gables, two of which are half-hipped, displaying mostly 19th-century details. Inside, the beams that support the upper floors are from the 17th century, and the renovations incorporating Regency features can be traced. Additionally, there is an 18th-century staircase at the rear. The old tie-beams are likely the only remnants of a pre-17th century timber-framed house.
