Description

A pair of cottages dating from the 16th century, with alterations in the 17th and late 18th centuries. Originally a timber-framed late-medieval hall house, it was later floored and a fireplace added in the early 17th century, followed by extensions at each end and a re-facing in the 18th century. Number 1, which sits at a lower level than Number 2, is two storeys high and has 2.2 windows. Number 2 is single storey with an attic, also with 2.2 windows. The roof is thatched, with a hipped section at the south end and a low eaves and catslide at the rear, along with eyebrow dormers on Number 2. The upper part of Number 1 shows exposed timber framing, with brick infill in a Flemish-over-English bond pattern. Number 2 has roughly squared chalkstone walls with brick dressings and cambered openings on the ground floor. Casement windows are present, with one replacing the central door of Number 2. Boarded doors are visible. Inside Number 2, the framing reveals the insertion of the first floor and the attachment of a large chimney breast to the south end of the building.
