Description

22 and 24 Bell Street is a house that was later converted into two cottages, now under one ownership. This late 16th-century timber-framed building was refronted in the early 19th century and had its windows changed in the mid-20th century. The exterior is covered in stucco that mimics masonry. It features a wooden bressumer and has an old tiled roof with a catslide at the rear, along with a tall original brick chimney stack also at the rear. The building is two storeys high and has three bays, with the chimney located at the back. Most of the windows are 1930s metal-framed casements, except for the ground floor on the right, which has an early to mid-19th-century shopfront complete with a cornice, pilasters, and six panels. The door for No. 22 is from the 20th century, while No. 24 has a four-panelled door.

Inside, the end left room, originally a parlour, features a chamfered spine beam and similar floor joists with lamb's tongue stops. The central room contains a large open fireplace with a chamfered beam that has a lamb's tongue stop, a salt niche, and a bread oven, along with a curved brick chimney breast. The spine beam is chamfered with a moulded post, and the floor joists are also chamfered with run-out stops. The first floor reveals an exposed box frame with a midrail, including both curved and straight tension braces. The roof is a through purlin type with queen posts and curved windbraces, and there is an outshut that likely dates from the early 18th century.
