Description

Lime Tree Cottage, with its attached barn, dates primarily to the 18th century, with significant alterations in the mid-19th century. It is a small, two-story cottage of two windows, designed with a symmetrical east-facing front. The roof is tiled, with tapered end stacks. The lower walls are brick, while the upper part and the two south-facing gables are tile-hung, featuring scalloped bands to the front. The windows are cast metal Tudor casements, with ground-floor bays covered by pent tile roofs and cill brackets. The porch has an open, decorative timber front and perforated brick cheeks with an octagonal design. A narrow, two-story gabled projection extends northwards and connects to a large, hall-like structure. This structure has asbestos roofing with a catslide at the rear, tile-hung walls with scalloped bands, and three front bays mirroring those of the cottage. The north gable of the cottage displays exposed framing from the original date. Numerous details of the mid-19th century, elaborated upon here, are found in other nearby 'estate' cottages.
