Description
Gray's House, which includes the forecourt walls and railings, is a two-storey building from the 18th and 19th centuries. The west elevation, facing the garden, features three windows on the north side, separated from a wider four-window south side by a projecting taller wing with rounded corners that contains large triple-lights. The roof is tiled, and there is stone coping on the parapet of the projecting wing. The walls are made of red brick in Flemish bond, with a first-floor band and a plinth on the north side. The windows are sash types set in reveals. A finely crafted white stone doorcase, possibly designed by Soane, features a full Doric Order with a pediment, and the three-quarter columns are attached to a rusticated background. The east elevation is from the mid-19th century and exhibits a Tudor Gothic style, with two large and two small gables, hood moulds above mullion and transom windows, and two angular bays on the ground floor. The forecourt is enclosed by a roadside brick wall with panels, a coping band, and wrought iron railings in an ogee pattern.
