Description
The Kingsclere Memorial Cross is a war memorial located in the grounds of St Mary’s Church. It features a stone cross mounted on a 5-meter tall hexagonal stone shaft, which stands on a square plinth. The plinth has recessed panels on all sides that contain inscriptions and names, and it is elevated on three octagonal steps. Surrounding the memorial is a narrow flower bed, and there are two steps leading up to it from the pavement level on Newbury Road. The memorial is enclosed by ten posts carrying a chain on three sides.
The west panel of the plinth displays the inscription: "THESE AT THE CALL OF KING AND COUNTRY/ LEFT ALL THAT WAS DEAR TO THEM/ ENDURED HARDNESS, FACED DANGER AND/ FINALLY PASSED OUT OF THE SIGHT OF MEN/ BY THE PATH OF DUTY AND SELF SACRIFICE" followed by names. The east panel features a decorative relief of crossed swords within a wreath, with the dates 1914, 1918, 1939, and 1945 inscribed in each corner. Above this relief, incised on the base of the cross, is the inscription: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN MEMORY OF THE BRAVE MEN OF/ KINGSCLERE/ DEAR SHALL THEIR BLOOD BE IN HIS SIGHT." Names are also inscribed on the north and south panels of the plinth.
